The despatch box

We're you thinking what the Conservatives were thinking? Did you believe the Lib Dems were the real alternative? Is Labour moving forward not back? This blog will focus on all things political. It will be irritating, agitating and maybe just maybe it will get you thinking.

The Surreal Alternative

In 48 hours I will be tucked up (hopefully) in my hotel room near Blackpool getting ready for the one day I have to spend at the Lib Dem Conference. Now what questions would you be interested to hear answered by those Lib Dem delegates.

Whether they are for or against congestion charging?

Whether they want to legalise hard drugs?

Whether they are a left wing or right wing party?

What do they stand for?

Any suggestions will be taken up!

Very much depends on what congestion your planning to charge. Congestion charging is appropiate in some circumstances.

Whether they want to legalise hard drugs?

    No

Whether they are a left wing or right wing party?

'Left wing' and 'Right wing' are absurd simplifications of politics. No one has a clear idea what they actually mean.

    What do they stand for?

    Freedom, fairness, trust :)
    (and lots of other waffle)

My point was that historically the Lib dems have been very much a franchise party that will campaign for one thing in one area and campaign against the exactly same thing in another.

The principle of charging for congestion is a fairly standard one - either you agree in principle or don't.

I think the terms of right and left wing are fairly understandbale. One Lib Dem MP took pleasure in telling me he was more left wing than Labour - yet good old Vince Cable wants to take on the mantle of moderate Conservatism - so I wonder what its going to be.

He'll want to privatise Royal Mail - yet many Lib Dem members may well be aghast to hear this.

Old Menzies Campbell commented that if the party is to be taken seriously it will soon have to adopt national policies - rather than having widely different regional variations.
